VINYL SERIES | Collection of Some of the Greatest Albums on Canvas

Here’s a look at our our representation of some of the most iconic vinyl albums of all time brought to life with paint on canvas. This was inspired by a client reaching out who has commissioned many of paintings and have them on display thorough their home ranging from city scapes, iconic structures of Cincinnati, animals and even some abstract pieces.

When they reached out they were looking for something fresh for their home that was nothing like what they had on their walls. We brainstormed a bit and I kicked over an idea to bring to life their favorite albums for display on their wall. After much back and forth, listening to a bunch of great music they aligned on the four albums.

From there, it was time to study the space in where the artwork would be displayed. First we started with color palette knowing that we’d be neutralizing the items to black and white and dancing key colors from their home into the art. We then worked up design layout four four canvases on their wall. Our first direction was four equal size canvases which was really neat. However it was a little expected and didn’t put much emphasis on one piece or another. So after that were were able to identify their favorite albums and look at a design direction that highlighted those. In the end we have a range of canvas sizes from 24″ x 24″, 20″ x 20″and even a 16″ x 16″ This really created a nice interest for the wall filling the space perfectly.

Here's a digital render to show how the paintings will look in their home.

Can’t wait till they see these paintings for the first time this evening!

Sisterly Love, Amsterdam

Here’s the final capture on this painting that captures the love between two sisters as they were on a family vacation in beautiful Amsterdam. The cobblestone moss filled roads, combined with the beautiful architecture really make this painting shine. There are multiple aspects to this painting that I really love. From a painting perspective I love the glow of light radiating from the right corner by the Juli Dans sign. The other component of the painting is that it really brings to life our passion of painting cities and combines it with human emotion. Thrilled with the final result and could not wait till our client had a chance to see it in person for the first time.

Here’s a quote from her Facebook post after receiving the painting. “Beyond excited to see the finished product in person! Jeff Johns and Colin Daugherty are SO very talented and I am always in awe of their skill and craft. This will be an heirloom piece for our family to enjoy for years to come!”

Cincinnati in January

Here’s the first few captures of our latest painting of the Cincinnati Skyline inspired by the view from across the Ohio River in Covington Kentucky. To just stand there and soak in all the colors in the buildings reflecting and dancing into the water is a treat to the eyes. It’s always a pleasure to try and capture this same experience at the home studio with a paint brush in hand.

This is now the fifth painting from this vantage point. You can check out these earlier paintings that lead up to this piece, Cincinnati in DecemberCincinnati Brilliance Cincinnati in July and Cincinnati in April.

Stay tuned as we continue to share the progress on this painting. We’re looking to finish it by the first week of December.

Cincinnati in April

CincinnatiinApril_lqHere’s the latest commissioned painting, titled Cincinnati in April. Really enjoying painting this perspective of the Cincinnati Skyline because it truly captures the essence of the city’s most iconic structures. The vivid Ohio River draws your eye right up to the beautiful Suspension bridge on the left of the canvas framed by the Great American building and ballpark to the right of the canvas. The symmetry of the city is spectacular from this vantage point, which is likely why this is the third painting from this perspective and we’re starting a new one next week.

Under the Suspension, Cincinnati

UnderTheSuspension3Here’s a start on this latest commissioned painting of the Cincinnati skyline titled, Under the Suspension. This is the third rendition of this painting and really looking forward to seeing how it shapes up. Super excited to be working from this reference again as the perspective of being under the bridge and actually on the river really draws you into the city and perches you right under all the magical lights of Cincinnati.

Foggy Night in Cincinnati

CincinnatiFoggyNightHere’s the progress capture on my latest Cincinnati painting. This piece captures the beautiful Suspension Bridge, vibrant Ohio River and fog sweeping across some of the city’s most iconic buildings.

You’ll notice that I’ve worked a lot of purple tones into this piece and that is for two reasons. 1.) I began working a session on this painting the day after the passing of Prince and was inspired to use more purple. 2.) With the primary focus of the painting being the Suspension bridge which is predominantly yellow in tone, purple is the perfect complement to really set off the bridge. Stay tuned for the final post of this painting.
